HUYSKENS & VAN RIEL (HVR):

WHY ARE THEY SUCCESSFUL IN TAIWAN RACING?

By Bob Prisco

The HVR’S have a great reputation.  They are exceptional birds because they are able to fly 100-600 miles in a day with great success, while possessing the speed and endurance to achieve outstanding results in all different types of weather and conditions.

The fanciers that have had great success with the HVR’S learned that they need light training during the week, and they will fly every week at all distances and speeds with no problems.  The SECRET is train them lightly during the week and race them every week.  Training them “lightly” means to loft fly them once a day, weather permitting, and 2 short tosses of 10- 20 miles near the water each week.  Then send the birds back to the races on the weekend. HVR:  The ideal bird for Taiwan racing.

We know the HVR’S are mostly an inbred family of birds, coming from 2 key pairs.  This makes them a good family to cross since they are a closely inbred family of pigeons. The HVR’S are the best family of birds ever introduced into Taiwan.  They possess the great qualities necessary for tough Taiwan racing (INTELLIGENCE, HOMING INSTINCT, ADAPTABILITY AND HEALTH).  Only a small percentage of racing pigeons are capable of racing to win the prizes, and the HVR’S are among the best, past and present, over land and sea, for the Taiwan racing series.

The key traits that distinguish the great quality of racing pigeons are their superior intelligence, natural motivation to come home and excellent health.  This type of pigeon comes in all colors, sizes, shapes and eye colors.  The fanciers who have had the greatest success with the HVR’S and the HVR’S crossed with other families selected smart birds first, with vitality and health, because they are the most important traits of the HVR.

The great success that the HVR’S AND THEIR CROSSES have had in Taiwan is due to “NATURAL SELECTION”.  The birds that have adapted and survived the race conditions have the right ability.   The others are selectively culled by the races.  The smart fanciers choose to breed from a bird that flies the race series or returns home after a tough race, even though he is eliminated from the series.  This bird shows it can handle the conditions of the race course and return home.  The smart fancier breeds from this bird and its brothers and sisters in hopes that it will pass on the same desirable results to future generations.  Birds will adjust over years to any conditions (ADAPTABILITY), land or sea racing.  The HVR’S have proven themselves over the last 50 years in Taiwan racing when many other families have been eliminated and culled because of bad results.

The HVR’S cannot be evaluated for their physical appearance because they come in all sizes and shapes.  Many times they are not very pretty looking birds.  The HVR’S best qualities are the ones you cannot see, but that are inside the birds (intelligence, compass, homing instinct, navigation skills, determination, courage, heart, self- motivation and good health). “HEREDITY IS HANDED DOWN FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT” and “LIKES BREED LIKES”.

Take a good look at the fanciers that are having the great success in the race series year after year.  Many are not buying birds every year.  Many are flying local racing pigeons of various strains crossed with HVR’S.  They have discovered the best birds to breed from are the ones that have adapted to this tough racing style and have proven they can fly over water and return home.  The important desire to return home in all types of conditions, even if the bird is late, is a good quality. The successful Taiwan fanciers are not flying straight bred families of birds.  They are taking the best birds in the loft that have had success in tough weather flying and come home, and are crossing them together.  Most of the lofts with great results have a blend of HVR BLOODLINES in their birds.  This blending of bloodlines has become the new modern racing pigeon in Asia today.

WHY HAVE THE HVR BLOODLINES HAD SUCH GREAT RESULTS?

They have proven they can handle tough Taiwan racing for over 50 years, both straight and crossed;

The HVR bloodlines develop early physical maturity at the young age of 3-6 months;

They possess the mental ability and internal qualities of intelligence, orientation, navigating ability, compass, homing instinct, motivation, determination, desire, heart and good health;

The HVR birds have proven they can fly a tough race course with strong head winds, cross winds, high humidity, extreme temperatures, fog and rain, with the ability to adjust in difficult weather conditions;

The HVR birds can race 100-350 miles as young birds, both mentally and physically;

The HVR birds are leaders, not followers.  They are individual thinkers and can fly alone for hours with confidence;

The HVR birds fly great on the “NATURAL SYSTEM”.  They fly with self motivation at a very early age;

The HVR birds fly great as young birds in tough races at various speeds and distances;

The HVR birds can fly for 10-14 hours non-stop in all types of conditions;

They are famous for breeding a high percentage of QUALITY BIRDS;

The HVR birds cross great with other families;

The HVR have a good reputation for excellent health and vigor;

The HVR birds do not need a great deal of training between races, and they will race each week; and

Both cocks and hens fly great in the HVR family.

HVR’S are associated with great success in Taiwan.  However, not all HVR’S are good.  Many breeders of the HUYSKENS – VAN RIELS have bred the birds several generations without flying and testing the birds in race competition.  The results were very poor when fanciers started to race the birds.  Those fanciers who just bred for pedigrees for several years to sell pigeons did a great deal of harm to the famous birds of HUYSKENS- VAN RIEL.  Many breeders kept only the dark checkers and culled all birds with white markings, another great mistake with poor flying results.

Remember, when looking for HVR bloodlines, we need the birds that have proven race and breeding results in each generation.  The HVR’S are the BEST FAMILY OF BIRDS INTRODUCED INTO TAIWAN, but fanciers must breed from birds that have proven success under race conditions.
